Dave Stinski
Guitar · Bass · Ukulele
Dave studied jazz and fingerboard theory at McNally-Smith College of Music and trained under Grammy-winning recording artist Mike Elliot. With more than 35 years on the instrument, he has deep roots in rock and blues and is comfortable in just about every style a student walks in with. Dave is known for meeting each player exactly where they are: patient, kind, and genuinely invested in every student’s progress. He has taught at The Guitar Shop since 2013 and lives on a 55-acre farm in Northfield with his dog, Wally.
Mike Graebner

Mike has taught and performed around the Twin Cities for 25 years. Trained in jazz and classical music at Arizona State University on the Jazzbird full-ride scholarship, he teaches acoustic fingerstyle, rock, folk, jazz, and classical, with current students ranging from absolute beginners to touring professionals. He has performed with Grammy winner Randy Brecker and The Century Big Band, works as a resident composer, and recorded an album of his own music. A devoted family man, Mike says teaching is where he finds the most joy.
Tilden Barger

Tilden studied music education at the University of Arkansas and has played professionally for more than 35 years across rock, country, jazz, and classical music. A Texas transplant who has called Minnesota home since 1996, he is a regular at local jams and open mics around the south metro. His lessons are tailored to each student’s own goals, balancing technique, theory, and performance with the thing that keeps people playing, which is enjoyment. Students who want to branch out love that he also teaches bass, mandolin, and ukulele.
Bang Do
Guitar
Bang has played guitar for 19 years and majored in guitar performance at Minnesota State University Moorhead with a minor in audio technology. His heavy metal band Mephonic opened for Paul Di’Anno, the original vocalist of Iron Maiden, at the Hard Rock Cafe in Saigon, and in 2021 he released his first instrumental EP, Rising From The Abyss. Today he plays lead guitar in the band Christmas on Neptune and works as a hired-gun guitarist around Minneapolis, and he brings that experience straight into his lessons.

A Teaching Team You Can Trust
Six teachers work out of the five lesson rooms here, and every one of them still plays. Between them they cover rock, blues, jazz, classical, bluegrass, and metal, so a student gets matched with someone who actually listens to what they want to learn. Some want full theory and reading. Others want to work songs out by ear. Both are fine here.

If you can hold a guitar, you are ready. Teachers here take on children and adults alike, at every level from complete beginner upward. There is no reading requirement, no audition, and no prior music background needed. The teachers work out where you are in the first session and build from there.
Lessons run in one of five monitored rooms, on a schedule you and your teacher agree. You are paired with a teacher based on the style you want and the days you can come in. Semesters are four weeks long and paid in advance. If you do not own a guitar yet, beginner guitars are on the wall, set up and ready.
Guitar lessons are $40 per half hour, paid in four week semesters up front. That rate is the same for every teacher and every instrument we teach, so the only thing that changes your total is how many weeks you sign up for. There is no registration fee and no recital fee. Ask about openings.
Most students start around age six, once their hands are big enough to fret cleanly, and there is no upper limit at all. Adults who quit as teenagers make up a real share of the roster. If a younger child is not ready for guitar yet, piano lessons are often the better first instrument.
Progress tracks practice more than lesson count, so what you do between sessions matters most. Your teacher sets goals with you and adjusts as you go rather than working to a fixed timetable. Somewhere in the first year a beginner instrument usually needs its action lowered, which is a quick setup job on our bench.
All lessons happen at the shop in Rosemount Market Square, in one of five monitored rooms off the main floor. There is nothing to travel to and no travel charge. Parking sits right outside the door, and the instrument wall and repair bench are a few steps away in the same building.
